Book Title: Overcoming Anger & Irritability: A self-help guide using Cognitive Behavioural Techniques

Author: William Davies. Dr William Davies is a clinical psychologist and director of The Association for Psychological Therapies. He has provided multiple workshops and trainings related to anger and violence.
Date: 2009

Suitable for: Adults who are experiencing difficulty with anger and irritability. This book may also be appropriate for some adolescents given that the estimated reading level is aimed at 14-16 year olds.

Book Summary: This book is based on the principles of cognitive behavioural theory. Meta-analyses have shown cognitive behavioural therapy to be effective in reducing anger. The book is divided into two main sections 1) information about anger and irritability and 2) what to do about reducing anger and irritability. There is a considerable amount of material on psycho-education, including information that helps to dispel myths about anger. This book would be of use and interest to those experiencing difficulties with anger and/or irritability as well as significant others whom may also be affected by this.

Strengths:

  • Provides a useful and simple model of anger that explains why some situations result in people feeling angry on some occasions but not others as well as explaining why the same situation can result in different responses from different people.
  • Provides multiple examples to demonstrate the model, how to identify unhelpful beliefs, and how to generate more helpful alternatives.
  • Provides useful and simple strategies that can be used to reduce anger and irritability.
  • Has useful summary sections at the end of each chapter.

Weaknesses:

  • Minimal reference to the available literature on the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural approaches to anger.
