In this episode of Listen Yourself Well we review the book sex, drugs, gambling and chocolate. Then Salvation Army gambling counsellor Bronwyn Powell-Grubb joins us to chat about a particular form of addiction, which more in our community than we might expect.
We discuss why people gamble, how prevalent it is in Otago and Southland, and what the warming signs are that your gambling has become problematic.
Lastly, Bronwyn shares about what local services are available to support those who gamble themselves, as well as the wider whanau who are negatively affected by it.

Then Graeme Pringle joins us from Mirror counselling services to talk about why we get anxious, what we can do about it, and how to prevent it. Graeme shares practical tips about getting the right body-mind balance to get on top of the symptoms of anxiety: such as getting out your head and into your body to nip rumination in the bud, or to shift into 'problem solving' mode when physical symptoms are the source of distress.

This episode is all about the newest fad “mood-boosting” books. We review a mood-boosting book called ‘The Alphabet of the Human Heart’ by Matthew Johnstone, famous author of ‘I had a Black Dog’, which is all about the ups and downs of life.
Then Shirley Jones from the Dunedin City Library talks to us about why self-help books are so popular, and the particular benefits of having the evidence-based and peer-reviewed books in the library.

Cath explains how she got interested in dog walking as part of her 30-year career as a physiotherapist, why dog walking is so beneficial for our mental and physical health, how it helps us tick the boxes of all ‘five ways to wellbeing,’ and how we can link into these benefits without having to be a dog owner!

Diabetes
This episode is all about Diabetes – we interview Chris Higgs, a professional practice fellow from the Otago University School of Physiotherapy, who set up the free Dunedin Community Exercise Programme back in 2014. A community-based rehabilitation programme, it is for anyone who has diabetes or has risk factors for developing diabetes (prediabetes). Chris talks about how it got started, and why it is so effective.
